Cerwin-Vega Speakers
In 2007, we celebrate a breakthrough in amplifier
technology. It is the 50 year
anniversary for solid-state amps, introduced by Cerwin-Vega in 1957 to offer
circuits as a more reliable alternative to tubes. It’d be easy to assume amps are Cervin-Vega’s
forte, but they are actually best known for their speakers.
Cerwin-Vega (also Cerwin-Vega!) supplied audio systems in
the mid 70s for pro and consumer audio.
Its pro audio achievements included an award-winning technology for
movie theater audio that served as a precursor to surround sound and big bass
theaters. They also supplied loudspeaker
systems to some of the day’s biggest entertainers for stage performance.
The Stanton Group now owns Cerwin-Vega, making them brothers
with Stanton (mostly DJ gear) and KRK (mostly studio speakers).
Cerwin-Vega has three reputable divisions: pro audio, mobile audio and home audio. Their pro audio lineup consists of passive and active cabinets for the stage, including massive bandpass cabinets, and also amps. Their mobile audio is notable for subwoofers that can handle up to 5,000 watts as well as the amps to drive them. Their home audio consists of bookshelf, tower and surround sound packages.
