Not the best buy out there, but in terms of studio monitors have a great look. They also provide good mids and highs, it is just the lows that they need to work on.
The Tannoy Precision 6d Studio Monitors are a so-so entry in the field of professional studio monitors geared to the amateur musician. These speakers are beautifully crafted in tones of black and silver on a cast chassis. Being near field monitors these speakers are of course also compact. I really cannot say enough about the styling of the speakers, they will definitely add a spark of class to any home mixing studio.
Setup of the precision 6d was fairly straightforward, especially with the optional auto calibrating microphone. Although the microphone gets it near perfect, it is still important to check your manual settings to correct minor problems that the auto calibration does not account for. Tannoy includes helpful charts and diagrams to assist in accurately setting the EQ which just adds to the simplicity.
There are a couple things I would have really liked to see done with this monitoring speaker set. The inclusion of a dedicated subwoofer would have definitely improved overall sound performance. The precision 6d tended to sound extremely underpowered in the low bass ranges. This can definitely be expected from a system that does not include a subwoofer, however if you are using these to mix hip-hop or dance music you'll find yourself extremely frustrated. I would have also liked to see the inclusion of the auto calibrating microphone in the base speaker package. Many other vendors include the auto calibrating microphone in speaker sets around the same price point.
All in all, the Tannoy precision 6d studio monitoring speaker set is an okay buy for the amateur studio musician. It faithfully reproduces bright mids and highs, but falls flat on the really thumping bass tracks. Its sleek lines and fantastic finish will look good on your monitoring console, and depending on what type of music you produce, it will sound great as well.
